Description:
Day 1 introduces participants to the foundations of EMDR therapy, beginning with its historical development and the research that established its credibility. The day explores the evolution from the Desensitization model to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, emphasizing EMDR's integrative theoretical framework and unique methodology. Participants will learn how to gather comprehensive client history using memory timelines, educate clients about EMDR, and assess readiness for processing. Emphasis is placed on developing safety and stability through Phase 2, building a strong therapeutic alliance, and preparing clients for deeper work. The day concludes with practicum experiences that support the application of Phases 1 and 2 using the AIP model.
Learning Objective:
- Describe the historical development of EMDR therapy, including its progression from chance observations to empirical validation through controlled studies.
- Identify the origins of EMDR therapy, emphasizing Shapiro's initial and subsequent research validating its effectiveness.
- Discuss the model and methodology via a close look at the theoretical framework and procedural techniques underpinning EMDR therapy, emphasizing its unique integration of psychotherapeutic approaches and dual attention stimulation techniques.
- Differentiate between the Desensitization model and the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, recognizing the name change and the revised theoretical framework.
- Utilize Phase 1 to gather client history and memory timeline and to inform and educate clients about EMDR therapy.
- Describe Phase 2 in establishing a therapeutic alliance, address concerns, and ensure client safety and stability.
- Identify client readiness for EMDR therapy and employ appropriate strategies to stabilize clients as needed.
- Describe the three-pronged approach of EMDR therapy, which includes addressing past memory networks, current disturbance triggers, and future adaptive responses to facilitate holistic healing and recovery.
