Help clients notice their nervous system with curiosity, not judgment.
52 illustrated cards, organized around four nervous system states, built for the therapy room. No theory lecture required. One image is often enough to start a meaningful conversation.
The Resilient Self
"I made this deck as a play-based clinical tool for the therapy room. It is designed to help clients notice their nervous system with curiosity rather than judgment."
"There is no right way to use these cards. You do not need to explain theory or teach a model for the deck to be helpful. One image can offer enough information to begin a meaningful conversation."
"These cards can be integrated into EMDR, play therapy, talk therapy, family work, or other clinical approaches. What matters most is how they support awareness, regulation, and compassion toward the self."
Each card offers a glimpse into the nervous system.
Inspired by Dr. Karen Fried's Oaklander Model and Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, every color reflects how the body may be protecting itself, or reaching for connection.

Ask: what feels strong or wise?
Let your body choose. No right way. Just begin.
Calm and engaged
Cards for the moments a client feels safe enough to be playful, curious, and open: the ventral state Porges calls social engagement.

Alert and mobilized

13 cards in this set. Useful for naming anxiety, anger, or urgency without shame.
Withdrawn or numb
Dorsal-state cards for freeze, collapse, and disconnection, giving language to the parts of a client that go quiet or still.

Activated and shut down
Cards for the tangled in-between, when a client is both wound up and frozen, and needs language that holds both truths at once.
14 cards in this set. For the moments that don't fit neatly into one state.
Built to sit inside any modality you already use

Talk Therapy
Open or close a session by naming what's happening in the body, not just the mind.

Jackie designs play-based clinical tools for therapists who want their sessions to feel less like a lecture and more like a conversation the body can actually understand. The Resilient Self Card Deck grew out of years in the therapy room, watching a single image do what a whiteboard diagram couldn't.
Questions clinicians ask
Is this a substitute for clinical training?
No. This is a reflection and resourcing tool, not therapy or a training program. It's meant to sit inside the clinical judgment you already bring to the room.
Do I need to know Polyvagal Theory or the Oaklander Model to use it?
Not at all. The deck is inspired by both, but you don't need to explain any theory for a card to be useful. One image is often enough to start the conversation.
Is this a physical deck or a digital file?
It's a print-ready PDF. Print it at home for personal use, or send it to a local print shop for a more durable, cardstock deck.
Can I use it with EMDR, play therapy, or family sessions?
Yes. It was designed to be modality-flexible. Clinicians use it inside EMDR, play therapy, talk therapy, and family work alike.
